{"id":377,"date":"2017-05-31T11:53:01","date_gmt":"2017-05-31T18:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tiebout.egbok.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=377"},"modified":"2017-06-05T14:17:49","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T21:17:49","slug":"surrender-versus-compliance-in-therapy-with-special-reference-to-alcoholism","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tiebout.egbok.com\/wordpress\/surrender-versus-compliance-in-therapy-with-special-reference-to-alcoholism\/","title":{"rendered":"Surrender versus Compliance in Therapy, with Special Reference to Alcoholism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<em><strong>But the actual or potential alcoholic, with hardly an exception, will be absolutely unable to stop drinking on the basis of self-<span class=\"hit\">knowledge<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0<span id=\"a2o84lpd4ja\" class=\"abt-citation noselect mceNonEditable\" data-reflist=\"[&quot;e1jpo11i86&quot;]\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><em>Half measures availed us nothing\u2026<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0<span id=\"au7181cqes\" class=\"abt-citation noselect mceNonEditable\" data-reflist=\"[&quot;y1j2njir17&quot;]\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tiebout is going to expand on his ideas about surrender and compliance, but first he makes note of the fact that the idea of surrender hasn&#8217;t been received very well by his colleagues, due to its connotations of defeatism. \u00a0He focuses on &#8220;acceptance&#8221; instead, which he defines as the result of surrender. \u00a0In the last paper, Tiebout referred to the period immediately following surrender as &#8220;the positive phase.&#8221; Here he describes the characteristics of &#8220;\u2026[acceptance] as an inner state of mind\u2026&#8221; tipping his idea that &#8220;wholehearted acceptance&#8221; is determined by &#8220;\u2026unconscious attitudes and feelings\u2026&#8221; like surrender itself.<\/p>\n<p>Tiebout then works up to a discussion of compliance by describing a patient who could &#8220;accept&#8221; [quotes in original] the reasons for his difficulties but didn&#8217;t &#8220;know how to be reasonable.&#8221; He sums this up by saying \u00a0&#8220;unless the unconscious has within it the capacity to accept, the conscious mind can only\u00a0tell itself that it should accept\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Tiebout returns to surrender and compliance.
